MUSEUMS AND EXHIBITIONS

The "Schwetzinger Kunstverein" exhibitions that take place in the castle garden's orangery every spring and summer, and in the baroque Palais Hirsch (Deer Palace) at the Castle Square in autumn and winter, offer an insight into the current trends of visual arts. "XYLON - Museum + Werkstätten", a centre for modern print graphics and drawing, is located in the former invalids' barracks at the edge of the castle garden. Exhibitions of the "Künstlerinitiative Schwetzingen" supplement these offers with information on current trends among local and regional artists.

The municipal office for cultural affairs has taken care of the subject Photograph. Every year during The Schwetzingen SWR festival (end of April – beginning of June) straightens it an exhibition of pictures of famous photographers (e.g. Monika Rittershaus, Irene Andessner, Jo Goertz, in planning: Richard Fischer and Horst Hamann).

SCHWETZINGEN TOWN MUSEUM

In the Karl-Wörn-Haus, the Schwetzingen town museum, located in the administrative building of the former canned-food factory Bassermann, you can gain an insight into nearly 7,000 years of local history. The historical path starts with exhibits of the first farmers – in 1989, one of the largest early-Neolithic Linear Pottery culture grave fields in Southern Germany was excavated in Schwetzingen – to finds from the Merovingian time, to the Electoral epoch under Charles Theodore and the 19th century. Asparagus, hops and tobacco. Special exhibitions cover diverse subjects on the town's history and general art history.

MUSEUMS IN THE CASTLE GARDEN

The castle garden has three museum facilities: the "Gartendokumentation" in the southern circle informs about the individual parts of the globally renowned garden. Interesting facts about the historical garden plants and the "Lapidarium", with its original 18th century garden sculptures, are provided in the orangery. A museum for historical gardening devices in the adjacent former gardener's cottage completes this overview of garden history.
